Equally daunting is the fact that many of the most promising prospects are far from major markets ? some in regions that lack even basic infrastructure. Others are in extreme climates, such as the Arctic, that present extraordinary technical challenges.

Well I am no expert and believed by some to be insane so what do I know....

This sounds like a bit of hysteria to me. Here are similar preditions from 1972. What will happen as we run out of oil? It will become more expensive! That will be a powerful economic motivation to use less & less oil and replace it with whatever else is a more economical alternative for the particular use.

One would think the motivation to use less oil would have already started with the price increases over the last 10 years. I'd also figger there should be motivation to use less gasoline in order to stop financing Osama et al, but no, it's more important to drive huge appliance-laden gas guzzlers in order to prove you're a real American, not a namby-pamby tree hugger. This will change when a gallon of gas reaches about $2.50.

Have a look at the price per gallon coloum and realise that the price you pay AS the worlds largest Oil user is far far to cheap. Realise also that the price is in pounds. Then realise why we are a nation of small car drivers.
Until new Sciences come up with an alternative You have to cut back on your consumption and the only way of doing that is Huge tax hikes on fuel.

LanDroid logic would seem to indicate that, but remember in Cincinnati (and elsewhere in the Midwest) in the sunner of 2000 gas prices topped $2/gallon? I remember paying around $2.50/gallon for premium at that time. I had to use premium because of that old Lincoln I was driving at the time required it. But that didn't seem to dent SUV sales at all. 09/11 didn't serve as a wake-up call either. Auto makers are making more money from huge pick-up trucks and SUVs than anything else so that's what they keep grinding out. And there are a lot of people with too damn much money out there buying them.

Actually LAN I read an article in the paper (I can't remember which one...USA TODAY I think) that polled SUV drivers about gasoline prices and none of them said they were worried about $2.50 per gallon prices. Most said they'd search for alternative transportaion when fuel hit $2.75 - $3 per gallon. All I can say is morons!!

Car dealers are reporting no slow down in sales of SUV's.

Perhaps you're correct LadDroid and this is a bit of hysteria. I think it's more real this time than in the 1970's but it could be all smoke.

BUT at some point, it's not going to be smoke & mirrors. At some point, oil WILL become scarce and then what???

Those who drive gas guzzling SUVs will be the ones most able to adapt because they have money and will not be nearly as adversely affected as people who struggle check to check and a severe spike in gas prices means you go out only when you have to.
